Exterior Inspection of Building Facade

10 Milk Street (Old South Building)
Boston, Massachusetts

The Building
  • V-shaped, 12-story, 127-ft high building with a 4-ft high parapet around the perimeter. The exposed elevations are constructed of brick masonry with ornate terra cotta appurtenances and individual wood and aluminum framed windows. Terra cotta building ledges occur at the third, fourth, ninth and eleventh floors as well as the roof cornices. The ledge at the ninth floor provides a prominent architectural feature.
Client’s Issues
  • Needed to comply with the City of Boston's Facade Ordinance 9.9-12 (observe the condition of the facade and determine if the facade poses a threat to public safety as a result of deterioration)
Gale’s Services
  • Performed multiple drops of swing staging to evaluate the facade above pedestrian walkways
  • Provided temporary stabilization to prevent potential falling object hazards (e.g. delaminated terra cotta)
  • Completed and submitted Exterior Wall Inspection Report to the City of Boston Inspectional Services Department
