The Inspectional Services Department of Boston
implemented Ordinance 9.9-12 (Inspection
of Exterior Walls and Appurtenances
of Buildings Requiring Periodic Inspection)
in 1995, which dictates that any building
over 70 feet high has to be inspected
for facade deficiencies that would
compromise life safety.
If
a building's height is 125 feet or
less, a licensed engineer can visually
inspect the building using binoculars
and/or adjacent building access (no
close visual inspection is required).
Buildings higher than 125 feet require
a close visual inspection using full
height mechanical access (i.e. swing
staging, pipe staging, rappelling,
boatswain chair). A minimum of one
full height drop per building elevation
is required for these higher buildings.
