Concrete culverts were constructed between 1900 and 1920 under streets in the City of Berkeley, California. Private developers built these creek culverts to develop land during this period. Some culverts have collapsed or subsided, particularly culverts beneath city streets that are subject to continual traffic vibration and impact. The client needed an evaluation of the existing concrete culvert under a five-story commercial building. Gale assessed the existing concrete culvert and provided remediation recommendations with cost estimates.
