The Building
  • Constructed in 1907, this neoclassical three-story historic structure consists of a clay tile roof, ornate terra cotta pavilion, pediments, and window surrounds along with glazed brick masonry, and sandstone foundations
Client’s Issues
  • Age and weather caused cracking, spalling, and deterioration to ornate terra cotta facade and deterioration of glazed brick
  • Displaced masonry, due to exfoliation of supporting steel and excessive moisture intrusion resulted in safety concerns
  • Restorations needed to comply with historical requirements
Gale’s Services
  • Investigated and evaluated exterior masonry components and windows to observe type, location, and extent of deterioration
  • Developed emergency stabilization recommendations to prevent displacement of masonry
  • Compiled historic criteria for replacement of ornate details, window surrounds, and cornices; researched availability of similar terra cotta components
  • Developed in-depth specifications and drawings for contractor bidding
